So many tasty pastries out there, in La Belle France!

Aesthetics matter here. Everything has to look, sound and taste just right!

Take the famous “baba au rhum” (rum baba) for example.

A traditional pastry invented by a skilled pastry chef (Nicolas Stohrer) in northeastern France (the Lorraine region) for an old monarch who could barely chew anymore yet still had a sweet tooth, or so the legend says (exiled king of Poland Stanislas Leszczynski.)

The pastry chef followed the old King’s daughter to Versailles after she married Louis XV.

The French king loved his creations and Nicolas Stohrer finally opened a charming boutique along an old Parisian street, rue Montorgueil, where tourists and locals flock 300 years later.

It doesn’t matter that the original “baba” wasn’t made with rum but with Tokay or Madeira wine. It doesn’t matter that the original recipe didn’t involve “crème pâtissière” (pastry cream.)

The “baba” like Paris, like France, has evolved since the 18th century.

It’s still pretty, still delicious, and quality establishments don’t skimp on rum when they serve it.

Bonjour.

There are many places to visit in a new town.

Some people are inclined to add the local cemetery to their top three "must see" list.

I am one of them.

This new article is about some of my favorite French cemeteries. Mostly it's about a special person who taught me how to find great stories in the most unlikely places.

Bonjour.

Back in the Loire Valley.

Back in Amboise where I stayed just a week ago with my last tour group.

In town tonight to meet a dear friend and fellow tour guide headed to Normandy with her group in the morning.

I know the route well.

We catch up. We laugh. We enjoy a delicious dinner. We promise to stay in touch this fall (and we will!)

It’s 11:00pm already. We part ways and I walk back to my “home away from home,” where I like to stay when I am in town.

Amboise is quiet. The streets are empty. Restaurants have shut down and tourists are asleep.

I walk alone as Leonardo (da Vinci) follows my every step from his favorite vantage point inside Saint-Hubert chapel.

Bonne nuit Amboise! À bientôt ma copine!

Today I returned to the Parc Monceau and went down memory lane.

2020-2021. Two French lockdowns. A home in the 17th arrondissement. One last Parisian pied-à-terre.

So much inspiration! Countless virtual tours and videos.

A confined life interrupted by morning and afternoon strolls along the peaceful lanes of the Parc Monceau.

Crêpes, gaufres, delicious “goûters.”
