Everyone knows French children are stylish, don’t snack and are well-behaved. Always.

Just don’t get between them and their sailboats at the Luxembourg gardens, ok?

Bonjour. Rainy morning in Paris (after a soggy T Bonjour.

Rainy morning in Paris (after a soggy Thursday.)

The Seine is smiling. Commuters and jet-lagged visitors, not so much! (Ever walked on a Parisian sidewalk as local drivers splash you instead of slowing down — on purpose, I swear!) Fun times.

But wait. What’s this big orb in the sky? Could it be… le soleil?

It’d better be: I’ll be welcoming almost 30 guests in the French capital later today.

Let the fun begin but first: Where’s the blow dryer?!

Bonjour, Who doesn't enjoy time travel and a chan Bonjour,

Who doesn't enjoy time travel and a chance to rub shoulders with iconic figures of the past?

Before returning to French roads with a new tour group, I've been spending leisurely mornings with Louise Weber, aka "la Goulue" (1866-1929.)

I was familiar with her story. She often kept me company as I stopped by her humble grave inside the Montmartre Cemetery during the second lockdown, in the fall of 2020.

It would be easy to dismiss "la Goulue" as a "fille facile" (a promiscuous gal,) a loud drunk and a glutton (hence her nickname) who wasn't shy and danced her life away for over a decade in Montmartre's bals and cabarets, including the iconic Moulin Rouge.

She pivoted before she turned 30 and reinvented herself into a "ménagerie" owner, performing with wild animals (often risking her life in the process) on popular fairgrounds in Belle Epoque Paris.

There were many men, her lovers, famous or not, one husband, an estranged son and friends like her "petit barbu" (Toulouse-Lautrec) or "Valentin-le-Désossé" (Boneless Valentin,) a popular can-can dancer.

Her story didn't have a happy ending, but she did it all her way.

Louise Weber spent most of her life, was happy (or struggled) in what's become one of Paris' most touristy neighborhoods, Montmartre.

A few years before his untimely death in 1901, Toulouse-Lautrec claimed he recognized neither Montmartre or its iconic cabarets. I can't imagine how he would feel today should he stroll around "la Butte."

I bet he'd make time to visit "Louise" his old friend at the Montmartre cemetery.

Glasses would clink; laughter would erupt. Together they would summon the colorful ghosts of their carefree and rambunctious youth. Together they would once again impersonate the renowned French "joie de vivre" that seems to elude so many of my countrymen today.

Bonjour. Une fois n'est pas coutume: Parlons des Bonjour.

Une fois n'est pas coutume: Parlons des animaux, les animaux de compagnie en France.

For once, let's talk about pets. Pets who live in France.

The S.P.A. (Société Protectrice des Animaux, founded in 1845) has just raised the alarm: Between May 1 and August 31 2023, 16,498 animals were abandoned in France by their owners.

Like every summer, many were found roaming aimlessly along roads, looking for the car (and the family!) that left them behind.

Les vacances, en France, c'est sacré, vous savez!
The summer vacation in France is sacred, don't you know!

I wish I could say this is a new phenomenon in my homeland.
I wish I could say most of these pets will eventually find loving homes.

I know life circumstances do not always make it possible to keep a beloved pet.

I know there are wars and natural disasters happening around the world right now impacting humans including children.

I will still dedicate this message today to all those who help out and rescue animals. I am trying damn hard not to judge those who abandon them on the side of the road.

After all, I love France, warts all, as I declared recently on a popular podcast. I get the French and know where they come from (most of the time at least.)

I like to think that for one "person" who abandons a pet that cramps their style, there are two who will likely adopt and help animals somewhere else.

I can't adopt now and I donated again to the S.P.A. today. The situation is dire. Most of their 64 shelters are overflowing with animals and turning some away. It is so bad the S.P.A. has come up with a great new communication campaign, "Perdu" (Lost Human) -- Because when we get "lost" our faithful pets look for us.

My message is in English and most readers of mine aren't French. I am still hoping that if you live in France or enjoy capturing pics of French pets when you visit you'll consider donating too.
