Bonjour. It’s been so hot in France lately! As Bonjour.

It’s been so hot in France lately!

As we found ourselves locked up (often in the dark) during an endless “canicule” (heatwave) over the last few days, my mind often wandered off to some of the special places I get to visit as an itinerant tour guide.

The Dordogne Valley, in the heart of the so-called “Black Périgord,” southwestern France, charms visitors during peak tourist season.

Medieval fortresses that once faced off during the Hundred Years’ war (Château de Beynac, Château de Castelnaud,) picturesque villages and their ancient stones houses, touristy yet charming Sarlat-la-Canéda, breathtaking scenery and of course delicious food: The Perigord has it all.

On a hot day, what better way to explore the area than on a canoe or - for a more leisurely ride - aboard a traditional flat-bottom boat, “les Gabarres?”

Join me on another fun French adventure as we float down the Dordogne river.

Follow the tour guide!

Bonjour. Béziers, in the heart of the Languedoc, Bonjour.

Béziers, in the heart of the Languedoc, is one of the oldest French cities (with Marseille) with a rich history and culture and enough scenic sights to please the most discriminating visitor.

Few people would have bet on Béziers over a decade ago when her new mayor, Robert Ménard, was elected. Influential yet controversial, Ménard is now in his third term and by all counts the city center has been transformed. Béziers is back and one of the most attractive cities in southern France.

From its mighty cathedral to the quaint streets of the old district, the recently overhauled covered food market, its most elegant promenade, les allées Paul Riquet, Béziers surprises and charms at every turn.

I took a day trip there a few months ago and am happy I finally found the time to share what I saw in Béziers.

Bonne visite!
