Bonjour. "Si tu n'arrives pas à penser, marche; Bonjour.

"Si tu n'arrives pas à penser, marche; si tu penses trop, marche; si tu penses mal, marche encore."
(Jean Giono, 1895-1970)

(If you can't think, walk; if you think too much, walk; if you can't think straight, walk some more.)

Today I walked through my city.

Familiar landmarks. Familiar streets. Familiar faces at times.

Home.

Yet you never know what discovery awaits at the next turn.

Les petits bonheurs.

Bonjour, A few days ago Parisian friends invited Bonjour,

A few days ago Parisian friends invited me to join them at the foot of “la Butte” (de Montmartre!) to try a new restaurant located along rue Dancourt, off boulevard de Rochechouart.

Under new ownership as of June 2025 the restaurant is in fact one of the oldest in the city. Just look around and picture artists of yore (now the Stuff of local Legends) sitting here and sipping some absinthe.

If you enjoy a cozy atmosphere, bistro-style food (i.e. no fuss, traditional French dishes perfectly executed) and attentive, knowledgeable service, you will love your time at “le Bon Bock.”

Not only did my friends and I savor our meal while revisiting some classics, I was also delighted by the playlist in the background. I cheered when new songs came on now and then (at the risk of embarrassing myself.)

And just like that, in a welcoming spot in Paris, two good friends by my side, I got to travel back in time thanks to iconic songs, the soundtrack for my French life.

“Un sans faute.” Perfection.

Looking for an authentic French meal on your next visit to Montmartre? Step off la Butte, leave the hordes behind and head down to “le Bon Bock.”

You won’t regret it.

Bonjour. A bit of a “clin d’oeil,” a priva Bonjour.

A bit of a “clin d’oeil,” a private joke, this shirt, but it enables me to use an acronym I’ve been smiling at for a while:

I.Y.K.Y.K.
(If You Know You Know)

So, the question is: Do you know? ;-)

Bonjour When you live in the Loire Valley you are Bonjour

When you live in the Loire Valley you are used to seeing elegant, Renaissance châteaux mostly built in the 15th and 16th centuries when French kings ruled from these parts.

Many come with great stories. Such stories often start with: “There was originally a medieval castle here.”

Most are gone today.

Montbazon is an exception. A short drive from Tours it offers visitors a chance to travel back to the Middle Ages and to learn more about medieval life and warfare.

The site has only been open to the public for a decade.

Here the oldest stone keep in France awaits. It was once part of a mighty fortress built by the powerful and ruthless earl of Anjou, Foulque III Nerra and his descendants.

The Touraine and the Anjou regions are dotted with the castles, abbayes, churches and monasteries Foulque Nerra once built as he occupied large sections of the Loire Valley.

The 60-minute guided tour in French takes us back to the 10th century and beyond. We hear names like “The Black Falcon,” “Henri II Plantagenêt,” “Philippe Augustus.”

From the vestiges of the keep to underground passageways (and their torture room,) the recreation of medieval trades with hands-on activities visitors are welcome to tackle, here’s our chance to debunk a few stereotypes about the Middle Ages and learn more about the past.
